WKU Wins on Late Rally

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Western Kentucky scored the last six points of the game to take a 72-68 win over Abilene Christian on Monday.

Bella Earle had given ACU an 11-point lead 24 seconds into the fourth quarter but the Wildcats struggled to slow down the Lady Toppers from there as the hosts started getting their three-pointers to go down.

A three-pointer by Earle and a free throw by Addison Martin gave ACU a 65-63 lead with 2:47 remaining. An Aspen Thornton three-point play put the Cats ahead 68-66 with 50 seconds to go.

Two WKU free throws tied the game with 32 seconds left and a Destiny Salary layup with seven seconds left gave the Toppers the lead for good. ACU missed two shots on its last real opportunity and fouled to stop the clock.

Payton Hull led ACU with 16 points while Aspen Thornton had 14 points to go with six steals and four assists. Gracy Wernli had 10 points. Clare Traeger had nine rebounds and Earle added eight.

ACU returns to action at home at 1 p.m. on Dec. 30, taking on Louisiana Tech.
