ABILENE – Abilene Christian played a strong game, grabbing a 1-1 tie with Grand Canyon on Thursday.
The tie ended ACU's postseason hopes, however. The Wildcats needed two wins this week to advance.
Chayse Thorn gave the Wildcats an early lead, playing in an assist from
Emma Nylund from the right side in the 15
th minute. It was Thorn's 14
th goal of the season.
Grand Canyon, coming off of lopsided wins last week over Texas-Rio Grande Valley and Stephen F. Austin, scored the equalizer in the 19
th minute with a goal from Lindsey Prokop.
GCU appeared to have a game-winner late in the second half but it was waved off on an offsides call.
"Outstanding, amazing effort and a lot of growth," said ACU Head Coach Stephen Salas. "Best game we've played all season. We didn't get the win but we're still trending in the right direction. They just put in 13 goals last weekend. To tie them; I can't say anything more than outstanding effort from our girls."
Thorn and
McCarly Holloman had two shots on goal each for the Cats and
Peyton Hill added another.
Lili Ross had four saves in the first half and
Savanna Alba turned away three shots in the second.
ACU wraps up the season on Sunday, hosting California Baptist at noon.
