Wildcats start WAC play 1-0 with five-set win over Sam Houston

ABILENE — The ACU volleyball team opened the WAC schedule Thursday night at Moody Coliseum with a thrilling five-set win over the Sam Houston Bearkats. ACU (4-9, 1-0 WAC) dominated the first set, 25-16, before falling in sets two and three, 25-21. ACU then responded with dominance again in the fourth set, 25-14, to send it to a fifth, and ACU capped it off with a dominant effort in the final set, winning the match 15-6. The Wildcats got their first win in the new Moody Coliseum, and snapped a six-match losing streak to start 1-0 in WAC play for the first time in their history.

  • ACU hit .351 for the match, including .441 in the first set win, .586 in the win in the fourth set, and .438 in the final set.
  • Five players tallied double-digit kills, including a team-high 13 from both Braden Bossier and Ashli Edmiston. Jada Birkel and Bryley Steinhilber each tallied 12, while Breanna Box recorded 11.
  • Bossier hit a ridiculous .650 Thursday, while Box hit .625 from the middle as well. Birkel hit .550, and Madison Rohre tallied two kills in five total attempts.
  • Rohre recorded 25 assists, while Madeline Guffy tallied 27. Both set the ball well Thursday night.
  • Defensively, ACU tallied 71 digs, with Sara Carrizales, who got the start Thursday, tallying 17 of them. Steinhilber dug 14 balls, while Bossier snagged 10.
  • Bossier led the way with five blocks, while Londyn Gray tallied three, and Steinhilber, Box, and Birkel each had a pair.

News and Notes
  • Thursday marked ACU's first conference match inside Moody Coliseum since Nov. 16, 2019 against Lamar.
  • Rohre is now up to 2,039 career assists.
  • The 72 kills matches a season-high, tying their match against Texas Southern. ACU's .351 hitting percentage is by far a season-best.

Up Next
The Wildcats will have a week off before hosting UT Arlington on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. for Battle of the Greeks night. ACU will wrap up that weekend on Saturday, Oct. 1 with a home match against SFA at 1 p.m. for the annual Pink Game. Both matches will air on ESPN+.
