STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Genner Cervantes set a new career-high for strikeouts,
Hunter Gieser and
Grayson Tatrow hit home runs, and the ACU baseball team picked up its fifth-straight win in WAC play Saturday afternoon, topping Tarleton, 7-4. The Wildcats (25-21, 13-10 WAC) took the lead with three runs in the second inning, and used stellar pitching from Cervantes and
Max Huffling to get the series win.
Tanner Tweedt led ACU with three hits, as the 'Cats get their fourth WAC series win of the season. ACU moves into a tie for third place with UTRGV at 13-10 in the Southwest Division, and now goes for the sweep of Tarleton on Sunday afternoon.
How It Happened
- Tarleton took the lead in the bottom of the first with an rbi-single off Cervantes, and led 1-0.
- ACU responded in the top of the second frame, beginning with a
Bash Randle double down the line in left to score
Hunter Gieser and
Bryson Hill. It gave ACU the lead they would not give back. Tatrow made it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly to plate Randle.
- Tweedt made it 4-1 in the top of the fourth with a single into left center field to score
Colton Eager. ACU led by three halfway through the game.
- Tarleton got a run back in the home fifth with a single off Cervantes, but the lead was still 4-2.
- Gieser launched a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to lead 6-2, and Tatrow added a solo shot in the top of the ninth inning to push the lead to 7-2.
- Tarleton hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, but it did not matter, as ACU got the series win with a 7-4 victory.

- Cervantes tallied a career-high 11 strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work, allowing two earned on six hits.
- Huffling, who went 3.0 innings in a start on Tuesday against #9 Texas Tech, tossed 4.0 innings out of the bullpen, allowing two earned on three hits with a strikeout.
- Tweedt led ACU with three hits and drove in one, while Tatrow tallied a pair of hits.
- Gieser and Randle each drove in two runs as well, and Gieser scored twice.
- Tatrow's homer was his team-high 15th of the season, while Gieser's was his 12th.

- The 15 home runs by Tatrow tie an ACU Division I program record for the most in a single season.
