Bats erupt to help Wildcats take opener against division leaders

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The ACU baseball team opened a three-game series with Sam Houston on Thursday night, coming away with a 10-5 victory over the current WAC Southwest Division leaders. A six-run outburst in the second proved to be the difference, with Grayson Tatrow capping the big frame with his team-best 17th home run of the season.

How It Happened
  • The Bearkats started the scoring in the first inning, but the Purple and White answered with a huge second.
  • Tanner Tweedt began the frame with a seven-pitch walk, and Miller Ladusau was hit by a pitch to set the table. Two batters later, Hunter Gieser singled to center to load the bases, and Brett Hammit followed with a base hit to center to plate ACU's first two runs of the day.
  • Mitchell Dickson came away with a single through the left side to bring in Gieser, and Tatrow belted an opposite-field shot to left to break it open.
  • Hammit plated a run in the third with an RBI groundout to make it a 7-1 game, but the home nine got it back with a single in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Sam Houston broke through with a run in the home sixth to cut the deficit to four, but the Wildcat bats went right back to work in the top of the eighth.
  • Shortstop Bash Randle lifted a two-run shot to left center, and Tanner Tweedt added a single for ACU's final run of the game.
  • The Bearkats scratched across a pair of runs in the final chapter but were unable to complete the comeback, allowing ACU to hold on for the victory.

Stat Pack
  • Dickson picked up a four-hit game, while Tweedt and Bryson Hill each came away with a pair of hits, while Tatrow and Hammit combined for six RBI.
  • Tyler Morgan picked up the win for the Wildcats after allowing just one earned run and fanning six hitters over five innings.
  • Max Huffling was the first man out of the ACU pen, adding six strikeouts of his own over the next three innings.
  • Sam Berberich closed the door, overcoming a walk to record the final two outs of the ballgame.
  • Sam Houston starter Matt Dillard was tagged for seven runs over 4.1 innings, and the Wildcats saddled him with his fifth loss of the year.

Beyond the Box Score
  • With the win, ACU snaps a five-game losing skid against Sam Houston.
  • Dickson has now reached base safely in each of his last 15 games, the longest streak on the team.
  • Tatrow remains the only player in the league with at least 15 home runs and 10 stolen bases.

On Deck
  • The Wildcats and Bearkats resume the series with Game 2 on Friday, with first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m. from Hunstville. ACU will likely face Sam Houston lefthander Steven Beard, who ranks third in the Southwest Division in wins.
