Wildcats bring home WAC title after roller coaster final round

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The ACU golf team hauled in the Western Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon, storming back to win the title on the final hole of the weekend. Alex Clouse sunk the putt that brought the program a championship trophy in its' first year in the league, helping the Purple and White to finish at 7-under for the event.
The final round featured each of the top three teams – ACU, Sam Houston, Grand Canyon – all taking turns with the lead with New Mexico State lurking within striking distance for most of the day. The Wildcats made the turn at 3-under and one back before finding themselves four strokes out of first with four holes to play and at one point dropping to third place.
ACU was picked fifth in the pre-championship polls earlier this week but consistently moved up all weekend, finishing Friday in third, Saturday in second, and Sunday with a championship. Logan Diomede and Francisco Osio each turned in a pair of late birdies, while Zane Heusel birdied the final hole and Brian Choe went par or better on his last seven.
The tone was set for Clouse, but the senior's final hole of the tournament started off with a bleak twist, as his tee shot went wide right and landed in the thick of the Nevada desert. After taking a drop, Clouse found his way back to the fairway and eventually the green, but after Sam Houston bogeyed the hole, Clouse was able to close the deal with a soft-touch putt to begin the celebration.
