Wildcats drop tournament opener to UVU

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Offense did not come easily for the Wildcats on Wednesday afternoon as they dropped their opening WAC Tournament game to Utah Valley, 7-0. A low-scoring affair through six innings, the Wolverines put up six runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 

• Both teams got out to a slow start offensively with both pitchers dealing through two innings. Sidney Holman-Mansell fanned three batters through two while four of the first six ACU batters went down swinging.
• The Wildcats loaded the bases in the third inning behind a leadoff walk and infield single, but could not capitalize to get on the board.
• A leadoff double in the fourth inning put a runner in scoring position for UVU. The runner advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on another wild pitch for the 1-0 lead.
• Utah Valley added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly early in the seventh to go up 2-0.
• After a run came home via a walk, UVU hit a grand slam to go up 7-0.

 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

• Mercedes Eichelberger extended her on-base streak to 12 games with a leadoff walk.
• Holman-Mansell tallied five strikeouts on the night to bring her season total to 149.

 
ON DECK: 

• The Wildcats will play tomorrow in an elimination game at 7 p.m. ACU will face the loser of the Seattle/SFA game.
