Wildcats host Lamar, travel to SFA this weekend

ABILENE, Texas - The Wildcats are looking at a tough schedule this week after a tough overtime loss to Sam Houston last Thursday. Abilene Christian will host the Lamar Cardinals on Thursday night before turning around to make the trip to SFA on Saturday. The team is battling for seeding in the WAC tournament and every win gets the team closer to having an extra day bye in the tournament.

ACU Storylines (17-8, 8-6 WAC)

  • The Wildcats are looking to bounce back after a road loss to Sam Houston in overtime last Thursday. The last time the Wildcats faced Lamar they held off a comeback from the Cardinals winning 85-82.
  • Coryon Mason continues to lead the team in scoring at 12.3 ppg, the senior is just six points away from his 1,000th career point at the NCAA level. 
  • Airion Simmons is leading the Wildcats in scoring in conference games, averaging 14.3 ppg and 7.3 rpg. 
  • Damien Daniels has 86 assists on the season which moves him into a tie for 10th for assists in the season. He is just 11 assists away from totaling his most in a season for his career. 

Scouting the Cardinals (2-23, 0-14 WAC)

  • Lamar is coming off a loss to SFA last weekend, 70-56. C.J. Roberts scored 18 points to lead the team.
  • Roberts is leading the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game and both Jordyn Adams and Davion Buster are also averaging double figures. 
  • Lincoln Smith is averaging 11.2 ppg and 7.2 rpg in conference action. 

Scouting the Lumberjacks (18-8, 10-4 WAC)

  • SFA has won six in a row after starting WAC play 4-4. The team has wins over California Baptist, Dixie State, Utah Valley, Chicago State and Lamar in the stretch. All but one of those games the Lumberjacks won by double-digits.
  • Gavin Kensmil is leading the team in scoring and rebounding at 16.0 ppg and 6.8 rpg. 
  • The team is averaging 9.5 steals per game and much like the Wildcats is one of the top turnover forcing teams in the country.
