ABILENE – Last season the Wildcats went into Reed Arena and their suffocating defense gave them a chance to pull off a major upset. An offensive rebound and last second shot gave the win to the Aggies, but it set the tone for the ACU season going forward. This year a new-look Wildcats roster will have an even tougher test ahead of them as they prepare for the rematch with Texas A&M.

ACU STORYLINES

  • WILDCATS OPEN MOODY WITH A WIN | The Wildcats opened the 22-23 season with a win over Jackson State in the newly renovated Moody Coliseum. In front of a crowd of nearly 2,500 people ACU jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead behind a hot shooting start and a stifling defense. The team had to fend off a furious comeback attempt by the Tigers as the Wildcats struggled to find their offense in the second half, but came away with a 65-56 victory to start the season 1-0.
  • CAMERON GOES FOR A CAREER-HIGH | Tobias Cameron was a bright spot for the Wildcats on opening night as he dropped 18 points to match a career-high in scoring that included going 4-7 from deep. He also grabbed six boards and had two blocked shots in a stellar performance to open his final season in Abilene.
  • PLEASANT SIDELINED WITH INJURY | March Madness hero and grad transfer Joe Pleasant will be on the sidelines for his first few games back with the Wildcats while he deals with a lingering injury. The team expects to have him back soon but they will have to find someone who can replicate his scoring and defense on the interior until he suit up again.
  • DANIELS, CAMERON EYE 100 CAREER WINS | With the Wildcats putting together four-consecutive 20-win seasons, both Damien Daniels and Tobias Cameron are nearing 100 career wins. The win over Jackson State put the pair at 97 wins with the 'Cats.

SCOUTING TEXAS A&M (1-0, 0-0 SEC)

  • The Aggies opened the 2022-23 season with a dominant 33-point win over Louisiana-Monroe at home on Monday night. The team had five players score in double figures as they shot over 50 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from three.
  • The team got 44 points from their bench, led by Hayden Hefner who tallied 12 points, including 10 in the first half.
  • Wade Taylor IV led all scorers in the opener with 18 points while going 4-6 from deep.
  • TAMU held ULM to just a 27 percent shooting mark from the field and 10 percent from long range.
