Fourth quarter fuels 'Cats win over Cards

ABILENE – Jamie Bonnarens and Sarah Griswold each scored 17 points, Madi Miller dropped in 12 herself, and the ACU women's basketball team swept the weekend at home on Saturday with a huge victory over Lamar, 66-54, moving into soul possession of fourth place in the WAC standings. The Wildcats (14-7, 6-4 WAC) closed the game on a 12-1 run in the final five minutes to seal the deal, and shot 67% from the floor in the final quarter as well. ACU closes the home weekend 2-0 and builds a winning streak once again in front of multiple former Wildcats on Alumni Day.
 
Turning Point: The back half of the fourth quarter.
The game was tied, 52-52, with 6:52 remaining in the ballgame. From that point on, ACU outscored Lamar 14-2. Griswold and Emma Middleton each scored on a layup inside, and leading 56-53, Kamryn Mraz hit a couple of free throws. After a couple of minutes of back-and-forth possessions, Lamar had multiple chances to tie it or take the lead, but Madi Miller got back-to-back steals to silence any Cardinal opportunities. Bonnarens then put the team on her back in back-to-back possessions, pushing the lead to seven with a layup with 1:30 to play, and then hitting a corner three-pointer to go up 10, 63-53, with 54 seconds left to ice the game. ACU held Lamar to just one point and no field goals in the final five minutes of the contest.

- 1Q | Bonnarens hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at five, and then give ACU an 8-5 advantage.
- 1Q | ACU got the leading scorer for Lamar, Akasha Davis, in early foul trouble. She would eventually foul out of the game in just 13 minutes on the floor.
- 1Q | Griswold tied the game at 12 with 26 seconds left on a layup inside.
- 2Q | Tatum Barber got a steal at the half-court line and a layup in transition to go up 20-18 at the 6:06 mark.
- 2Q | Bonnarens and Griswold combined for back-to-back layups to lead by five, 29-24.
- 3Q | Lamar tied the game at 32, and on the ensuing possession, Mraz buried a three from straight away to go up 35-32.
- 3Q | Miller hit a triple a possession later to push the lead to the largest it had been to that point, 38-32.
- 4Q | Griswold hit a jumper to put ACU up 50-45.

Stat Pack
- ACU made just five three-pointers, but scored 38 points in the paint Saturday.
- Bonnarens and Griswold each led the way with 17 points, one shy of Griswold's career-high. Bonnarens went 7-of-11 from the floor including 3-of-5 from distance.The grad transfer added five assists as well.
- Griswold missed only two shots (8-of-10), and added four rebounds.
- Miller dropped in 12 points in 37 minutes, and added five assists and a career-high five steals.
- Mraz scored seven points and added four rebounds.
- Barber scored six points, and grabbed a team-high seven boards.

Up Next
ACU hits the road next week with trips to the Windy City and Edinburg, Texas. The 'Cats take on Chicago State on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. before heading way down south to battle UTRGV for the second time on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m.
