ACU closes road weekend at Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas - The ACU men's basketball team, fresh off a come-from-behind win over UTRGV Wednesday, closes its weekend down in southeast Texas against a familiar foe in the Lamar Cardinals. The Wildcats (13-7, 4-5 WAC) and Cardinals (2-18, 0-9 WAC) are both first-year members of the WAC after moving over from the Southland Conference together this past summer. ACU puts its two-game winning streak to the test at the Montagne Center, where they are 4-1 all-time. The game will air on 102.7 The Bear on the radio, and on ESPN+ on TV.

ACU Storylines (13-7, 4-5 WAC)

  • ACU trailed UTRGV 81-69 with 1:59 remaining in the game. The Wildcats outscored the Vaqueros 18 of the final 22 points to erase the deficit, and Airion Simmons hit a three-pointer with nine seconds left to win the game, 87-85.
  • ACU hit three three's in the final two minutes and forced three UTRGV turnovers to get back in the game. The team forced 27 total turnovers and scored 33 points off of turnovers on the night as well.
  • Coryon Mason and Mahki Morris led the Wildcats with 16 points each, and Mason added two assists and three steals while Morris added three rebounds and three assists. Simmons totaled 11 points on the night as well as eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
  • Damien Daniels scored 15 points off the bench and had four assists and three steals as well.

Scouting the Cardinals (2-18, 0-9 WAC)

  • Lamar had four players finish the night in double figures and pulled within one possession with just over a minute remaining, but the Cardinals came up just short against Tarleton State, 62-57, Wednesday night at the Montagne Center.
  • Freshman Brock McClure scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds for an offense that shot 34 percent on the night, including eight three-pointers. He was joined in double figures by C.J. Roberts (13), Kasen Harrison (10), and Lincoln Smith (11). Smith also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
