Volleyball set to host Wildcat Classic this weekend

ABILENE—ACU Volleyball looks to bounce back from a midweek loss to Texas Tech this weekend as they host their second tournament of the year, the Wildcat Classic, in the Teague Center. The Wildcats got off to a great start last weekend, going 2-0 in the ACU Invite, earning wins over UIW and UTA. This team has been electrifying on the court and will look to continue that this weekend.

A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS

  • Lindsey Toney proved to be a powerhouse on the outside through one weekend of competition, hitting .377 with 62 kills on her way to tournament MVP honors.
  • Madison Rohre continues to run a solid offense with 139 assists on the year, averaging 11.58 assists per set. 
  • The Wildcats will be a little deeper this weekend with the return of Andie Sheppard who could provide some depth on defense. 
  • Toney, Jada Birkel, and Brea Box are all hitting over .240 for the Wildcats. 
  • This weekend will complete the Wildcats' six-match home stand to begin the season. 

SCOUTING UNM

  • The Lobos are coming off three straight-set sweeps in California last weekend, earning wins over Fordham, Cal State Fullerton, and UC Riverside.
  • New Mexico came out of last weekend hitting .295 as a team with six hitters hitting .300 or better through three matches.
  • Kaitlyn Biassou led the Lobos with 37 kills last weekend on a .351 hitting percentage, while Kali Wolf led the team with a .372 hitting percentage.
  • Biassou earned MW Offensive Player of the Week honors for her performance while libero Alena Moldan earned Defensive Player of the Week honors averaging 6.67 digs per set.

SCOUTING GREEN BAY

  • The Phoenix opened their season at home, hosting a five-team tournament going 1-3 on the weekend. 
  • Alexandra Zakutney led Green Bay with 57 kills on opening weekend and recorded three double-doubles as well. 
  • Libero Abby Gardner registered double-digit digs in each of the four matches, including a season-high 20 in their win over St. Thomas (MN).
  • Tiffany Paalman opened the season averaging 1.12 blocks per set with 19 total blocks on the weekend.

SCOUTING TEXAS SOUTHERN

  • The Tigers opened the 2021 season going 1-2 at the Colonels Classic with a win over Southern and losses to Nicholls and Niagara.
  • Thalia Cordero Moreno led TSU with 44 kills on the weekend on a .293 hitting percentage and two double-doubles.
  • Preseason all-conference selections Danielle Lilley and Aeris Ramsey both played well for the Tigers to open the season as well. Lilley hit .313 with a double-double in the win over Southern and Ramsey averaged 6.18 assists in a 6-2 offense. 
  • TSU put up 18.55 digs per set on the weekend compared to 17.45 for their opponents.
