Wildcats host UIW, UTA in ACU Invite

ABILENE—The 2021 season gets underway this weekend as the Wildcats host the ACU invite for opening weekend. This will be the first of two home tournaments to start the season for ACU. The Wildcats will play at 6 p.m. on Friday evening and 11 a.m. on Saturday morning. The team is excited to get back to fall competition and playing in front of a great crowd at home.

A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS

  • ACU returns 12 players from last year's team while bringing in three freshmen and three transfers. 
  • The Wildcats lost all-conference player Katelyn Mueller to graduation last spring but return five starters from last season's team that finished 7-8. 
  • Lindsey Toney will be a major contributor once again for the Wildcats. She was second on the team with 118 kills last season and hit .212 in the spring.
  • Newcomers Madison Lawler, Jada Birkel, and Londyn Gray will all have early opportunities to contribute this season in various roles. 
  • Brea Box and Braden Bossier will be back in the middle for ACU and will both look to take big strides forward this season. 

SCOUTING UIW

  • The Cardinals are coming off a 6-8 season in the spring where they finished Southland play 6-6 to secure an eighth place finish, they were voted fourth in the Southland preseason poll. 
  • Bethany Clapp returns in a key role for the team and was voted to the Southland preseason first team. 
  • Jackie Arrington also earned a preseason nod, named to the second team after a solid freshman campaign in the spring. 
  • In their only meeting last year, the Wildcats and Cardinals went to five sets with ACU coming out on top in San Antonio. 
  • The team returns the bulk of last year's team with 17 returners and three newcomers.  

SCOUTING UTA

  • The Mavericks and Wildcats met twice last season with the teams splitting a pair of five-set matches.
  • UTA returns each of their top five point scorers from a season ago including Brooke Townsend who was named to the All-Sun Belt preseason team.
  • The Mavs also return last season's conference defensive player of the year in libero Ali Wells who also earned preseason Libero of the Year honors.
  • UTA was voted to finish second in the West division of the Sun Belt.
