ABILENE -- Abilene Christian golf Wednesday recorded its best showing in seven years of competing at the Southland Conference Championship, placing third at 22-over 886 thanks to a brilliant 3-under 285 third round at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas.
ACU's score today was the lowest recorded by any team at this week's tournament as the quartet of senior Alex Clouse, juniors Brian Choe and Francisco Osio, and sophomore Zane Heusel all moved up the individual leaderboard.
"I'm very proud of the guys for again showing resiliency and never giving in, fighting until the very end," said head coach Tom Shaw. "That's a trait we've displayed all year. We almost caught Lamar for second and were making gains on Sam Houston for first. I told our guys that we didn't lose, we just ran out of holes.
"All in all it was a great team effort and one of the best years overall since I've been at ACU. What a tremendous group of young men. It's truly an honor and a pleasure to coach these guys."
Clouse went from eighth to fourth (2-over 218) with a 2-under 70 that gave him his first top-five conference showing. He previously was a Third Team All-Conference honoree in 2018 and 2019.
Osio cracked the top 10 after birding two of the last three holes, tying two others for ninth place at 8-over 224. He recorded rounds this week of 77, 73 and 74.
Heusel meanwhile shot up nine spots with a 1-under 71 to tie Choe for 12th place at 9-over 225. Heusel carded rounds of 74, 80 and 71, and Choe registered single-day scores of 79, 74 and 72.
Despite the fine final-day performance, ACU couldn't quite catch Lamar for runner-up honors as the Cardinals finished three strokes ahead of the Wildcats. Forty-ninth ranked Sam Houston State won its third consecutive league title with a 9-over 883 as three players (led by Paul Chaplet) finished among the top five.
Fourth-place Houston Baptist finished 22 strokes behind the Wildcats and McNeese ranked fifth at +58.
ACU tied Lamar for the most birdies with 41 and had 164 pars. Clouse's 11 birdies ranked second to Chaplet's 13.
