ACU and SLU meet in Monday night showdown

HAMMOND, La. – It will be 12 days on Monday since the ACU women's basketball team has taken the court for a game, but after COVID-19 and weather caused three straight games to either be postponed or canceled, the Wildcats will lace them up as they go for their third straight victory. ACU (12-5, 5-3 SLC) will take on Southeastern Louisiana in a game that was scheduled to take place on Saturday, but after the winter weather went through, the teams will square off Monday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as well as 102.7 The Bear.

SERIES HISTORY

This will be the 15th meeting between the schools Saturday, with ACU holding a lopsided 11-3 advantage. The Wildcats have won four in a row in the series after winning on Jan. 16 in Abilene. The game is never easy though. Southeastern Louisiana has always given ACU fits. The Wildcats won both matchups last season by eight and six points, and lost by three two years ago. Five of the last six meetings have been decided by an average of six points. The teams first met in a tournament in Fort Worth in 1979, with SLU winning.

ACU STORYLINES

  • SOUTHLAND IMPLICATIONS: ACU is currently tied for third place with McNeese in the conference standings at 5-3. The Wildcats do not play the Cowgirls this year, so stacking up wins will be important. Games not played count as ties, and wins count for three points in the new scoring system of the standings this season. The top eight qualify for Katy, while the top four get a first-round bye and the top two get a double-bye.
  • HUGE WIN LAST TIME OUT: ACU trailed by five with 3:20 left against Houston Baptist on Feb. 10, and closed the game on an 11-0 run to beat the Huskies, 62-56. Anna McLeod recorded her second straight double-double, the team defense and rebounding was clutch, and the Wildcats kept a perfect all-time record (11-0) against HBU.
  • MAGIC NUMBER - 70: ACU is 12-0 this season when allowing under 70 points this season, and 0-5 when allowing 70 or more.
  • RECEIVING VOTES: ACU is currently receiving votes in the latest College Insider Mid-Major poll.
  • VETS CONTINUE TO SCORE: McLeod and Alyssa Adams have combined for 26 double-digit scoring efforts this season, including 12 20-point games this season. McLeod ranks in the top 25 nationally with 46 three-pointers, and Adams ranks in the top 25 in field goal percentage (54.9%).

SCOUTING SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA (7-6, 6-4 SLC)

  • The Lady Lions have had two consecutive games postponed as well, but are riding a three-game winning streak, all of which came at home.
  • Two players are averaging double figures, led by Morgan Carrier's 14.5 PPG. She also leads the team with 35 three-pointers made.
  • Hailey Giaratano (11.5 PPG) is right behind in scoring, and Cierria Cunningham (9.6) give SLU a huge third scoring threat.
  • Head Coach Ayla Guzzardo is in her fourth season with the Lady Lions, and is 36-54 so far.
