ACU opens 2021-22 campaign at home Tuesday night

ABILENE – The ACU women's basketball team opens the 2021-22 campaign on Tuesday night at the Teague Special Events Center, hosting the University of the Southwest from New Mexico. The Wildcats open their 10th season under head coach Julie Goodenough and their ninth year as a member of Division I, with their first season in the new Western Athletic Conference. The season begins at 6 p.m. at home, and the game will air on ESPN+.

SERIES HISTORY

This will be the fifth meeting all-time, with ACU winning all four previous matchups. The last meeting came in Nov. 2019 with the 'Cats earning a 104-52 victory. All four matchups have been in Abilene, with ACU averaging 94 points per game in those matchups, and allowing just 46. The teams played in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

ACU STORYLINES

  • NEW FACES: ACU has 15 players on the roster, the most in the Julie Goodenough era (2012). Included on that roster are eight new players, including three graduate transfers and five freshmen. The team brings in Emma Middleton, Jamie Bonnarens, and Tatum Barber as grad transfers, and freshmen include Bella Earle, Alexis Babineaux, Addison Martin (who will redshirt), Niyah Johnson, and Nykale Cramer.
  • RETURNERS: Seniors Madi Miller and Paige Emborsky are joined by juniors Kamryn Mraz and Sarah Griswold. Katie Horyna and Taylor Morgan return as sophomores the guard position, while Alice Stevenson returns as a sophomore inside.
  • FIRST THREE AT HOME: ACU opens with Southwest, UTSA, and Angelo State at home to start the season, all at the Teague. Saturday, Nov. 13 against UTSA is a part of a doubleheader with football, and the tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. ACU hosts Angelo State on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. for Kids' Day.

SCOUTING SOUTHWEST (0-4, 0-0 RRAC)

  • The Mustangs have four games under their belt as members of NAIA, and are in the midst of nine consecutive games away from home. Tuesday night's game is considered an exhibition for Southwest as non-NCAA members.
  • Harlei Haceesa is the team's leading scorer at 13 points per game, while Isabel Rodriguez averages 12 points per contest.
