ABILENE – Six Wildcats put the ball in the back of the net,
Chayse Thorn had a pair of assists, and the ACU soccer team dominated the Chicago State Cougars Saturday afternoon, 6-1, for its second straight win. ACU (4-4-1, 2-0-1 WAC) led 1-0, CSU then tied it with a penalty goal, and then the 'Cats rattled off five straight scores to pull away. The six goals are the most goals in a game in two seasons for the Wildcats, who wrapped up their six-game home stand with a 3-2-1 record.
"It was great to gain some more offensive confidence today," said head coach Casey Wilson. "Having six different goal scorers was huge going into a tough upcoming weekend."
That weekend includes matchups with SFA in Nacogdoches, Texas on Friday night, and a road date in Huntsville, Texas against Sam Houston next Sunday.
The Goals
- 11' | Natalie Wodka took a pass from right to left from Natalie Jones, turned and fired from outside the box to get ACU on the board.
- 24' | After a handball penalty in the box on ACU, Chicago State's Sara Quevedo scored on a PK to even the match.
- 26' | Chicago State was then called for a red-card handball in the box that allowed
Christina Arteaga to strike one off her right foot and in for her first score of the season.
- 32' |
Chayse Thorn took a pass from
Grace Ornelas, who got the ball from
Taylor Denn, and went down the sideline and then down the end line and put one in on the left side for the score to give ACU a 3-1 lead at halftime.
- 59' | Emilly Heidman, who scored off a header last Sunday to beat UTRGV in overtime, scored again on a header after a beautiful pass from
Brianna Diaz for the first goal of the second half.
- 80' | Caylen Wright got a pass from Thorn and weaved her way to the middle of the field before sending a bullet through the net for the fifth goal of the day for ACU.
- 87' | Thorn hit
Laura Mauldin with a good ball and the senior gathered in the box, turned her body left towards the goal, worked her way around the defender, and scored to put the exclamation point on an incredible afternoon.

The Numbers

- ACU held the ball for 59% of the game.
- Wodka tallied seven shot attempts, a career-high, while Heidman and Arteaga tallied four apiece.
-
Jordan Michie took three attempts, and altogether the Wildcats saw shot attempts from 15 different players.

Up Next
- The Wildcats head to SFA on Friday before wrapping up the road weekend at Sam Houston on Sunday. It's ACU's first time away from Abilene since Aug. 29.
