Volleyball opens 2021 hosting UTA Friday and Saturday

ABILENE—The long awaited start of play for ACU Volleyball is just over 24 hours away. The team welcomes UT Arlington to the Teague Center for two games on the weekend, Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. The Wildcats roster features 12 true freshmen and sophomores but the extra semester of training time leading up to this weekend has helped to prepare this young team for competition. The new look team will rely heavily on the leadership of their veteran players who can help the young roster progress throughout the season.

WILDCATS WEEKEND OUTLOOK

ACU will feature some familiar faces with the return of Kate Mueller, Lindsey Toney, Madison Rohre, and Mackenzie Harris from starting roles a season ago. Breanna Box and Logan Browning each made impacts for the Wildcats in stretches last season and should look to feature more prominently in the rotation. Transfer Kate Blasingame brings a solid all-around talent to the team as well as needed experience to a young roster. There are also several freshmen who could make an impact early.

Mueller is coming off an ACL tear and surgery that sidelined her for most of the 2019 season. As the lone senior, she will have to lead a young team but the extra time to recover from her injury has allowed her to get back her dominate presence on the court.

Blasingame will be a great addition for the Wildcats as both an all-around athlete and another leader on the court. In two seasons at ULM, she put up top notch numbers and tallied 20 double-doubles in two seasons for the Warhawks.

SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS

Unlike many teams who had their fall seasons shut down completely, UT Arlington and the rest of the Sun Belt Conference were able to put together a full fall season, including a conference tournament. The Mavericks went 11-7 in the fall season, 10-6 in regular season conference play and 1-1 in the SBC tournament. They have a minimal spring season that consists of exclusively non-conference competition, beginning this weekend in Abilene.

Brooke Townsend led the Mavs with 221.5 points in 68 sets played and led the team with 200 kills. Ali Wells led the team with 435 digs, that works out to a monster 6.4 digs per set.
