MBB preps for Saturday afternoon matchup with Bears

ABILENE, Texas - Coming off a tough loss at Sam Houston on Wednesday night, ACU looks for a bounce-back victory at home on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats welcome Central Arkansas to the Teague Center with the hope of moving to 4-1 in conference play. ACU has yet to lose in the Teague Center this season and currently holds a four-game winning streak over the Bears including an overtime thriller in Conway last year.

SERIES HISTORY

The Wildcats hold an 8-3 advantage in the series including their current four-game win streak against the Bears. ACU is 4-2 at home against UCA with their last win a 75-70 thriller in which the team tallied 17 steals, their most ever against a DI opponent. 

ACU STORYLINES

  • ACU dropped their first conference game of the season on Wednesday in a defensive battle with SHSU. The team was also without starter, and leading scorer, Coryon Mason for the game. 
  • Airion Simmons is coming off a career night where he matched his best scoring effort with 16 points off the bench. 
  • The Wildcats remain one of the top defensive teams in the country, ranking 4th in the NCAA for scoring defense holding opponents to just 57.8 ppg. 
  • Despite the loss, the Wildcats held the normally explosive Bearkat offense to just 64 points, well below their previous season average of almost 82 ppg. 
  • The team will have a favorable matchup as the Bears are one of the worst teams in the country for turnovers, averaging 18.4 per game, while the Wildcats are forcing over 22 turnovers per game, for the best mark in the country.

SCOUTING CENTRAL ARKANSAS

  • After starting conference play 2-0, the Bears have dropped their last three Southland contests.
  • The Bears will be without their usual starting point guard, DeAndre Jones, who is sidelined due to injury. 
  • Central Arkansas played a tough non-conference schedule with three SEC teams (Arkansas, Ole Miss, Mississippi St.) and a match with No. 2 Baylor to end their non-conference slate. 
  • UCA has struggled on the road with a 1-8 record, but their lone win came on the road at McNeese to start conference play. 
  • Rylan Bergersen leads the Bears averaging 17.8 ppg.
