Heavyweights collide in Moody Tuesday night

ABILENE – The ACU women's basketball team can still win the 2020 regular season title in the Southland Conference, and need to win Tuesday night against the SFA Ladyjacks to do so. The Wildcats and Ladyjacks both sit at 22-5 overall, and if ACU gets a little help this week, they can win a share of the championship before the start of the conference tournament.

ACU vs. SFA: Tuesday, March 3 (5:30 p.m.)
SOUTHLAND SIGNIFICANCE
  • The Wildcats have earned a top-four seed in the league tournament, but can still clinch a share of the conference title in the regular season. If ACU beats SFA Tuesday and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi loses to Sam Houston State on Wednesday, there would be a four-way tie for first place heading into the final day of the season on Saturday.
  • If all four teams tie for first place, all four teams would be awarded as regular season champions.

SERIES HISTORY
  •  SFA leads the all-time series 8-2, but the Wildcats have never beaten the Ladyjacks in Abilene.
  • SFA has won six of the last seven overall, and five straight in the series, including a 69-59 decision in Nacogdoches on Jan. 29.

ACU STORYLINES
  • OFFENSIVE DISTRIBUTION: ACU has four players averaging double-figures in scoring this season, led by Breanna Wright's conference-leaing 17.8 points per game. Dominque Golightly ranks third in the league in scoring at 14.8, while Anna McLeod (10.2) and Lexie Ducat (10.0) round out the four starters in double figures.
  • MABRY ON THE GLASS: Junior Makayla Mabry is dominating on the glass as of late. The San Antonio native hauled in a career-high 14 rebounds in the win over Sam Houston State and grabbed 10 more in the win over Central Arkansas.
  • WE ARE IN!: With the win over Houston Baptist on Feb. 19, ACU punched its ticket to its third consecutive Southland Conference Tournament. ACU has only been eligible for three seasons, and has gone every year, including winning the title in 2018-19.
  • OFFENSIVE SUCCESS: The team ranks 14th in the country in scoring at 79.0 points per game, and the +22.1 scoring margin per game ranks ninth in all of women's college basketball as well. The 47.4% shooting from the field ranks seventh in America, and the 37.5% shooting from distance ranks ninth in the country.
  • I CAN DISH IT OUT AND TAKE IT: ACU is 24th in the nation in assists per game (17.7), 70th in assist/turnover ratio (1.1), and 47th in steals per game (10.0).
