Adams has career day vs. UAB

DeLAND, Fla. — The ACU women's basketball team got a career performance from senior Alyssa Adams Saturday at the 33rd Annual Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson University. The San Antonio native scored a career-high 26 points and hauled in a career-high 12 rebounds in ACU's 81-73 loss to UAB of Conference USA. The 12 field goals made also tied a Division I program record. It was just ACU's second defeat of the season and they have a quick turnaround to get back on track with a game against the host Stetson set for 11 a.m. ET on Sunday. ACU is now 6-2, while UAB moves to 5-1.

Turning Point: The end of the first half.

  • Leading 38-34 with 3:30 left, UAB went on a 12-2 run to close the half, including a 9-0 run to go up 43-39. Madi Miller hit a pair of free throws to get it to 43-31, but UAB's Caitlynn Daniels hit a three at the first-half buzzer to give the Blazers a 46-40 first-half lead.

Key Plays

  • The game was tight early on, with both teams trading baskets with ease. ACU went on a 5-0 run in the middle of the first quarter, highlighted by a Kamryn Mraz three-pointer and an Alyssa Adams layup. It was an 11-8 lead at the time.
  • Sarah Griswold ran the floor beautifully for a layup in the final couple minutes of the first, and followed it up with a sweet jump shot with 1:19 to go to give ACU a 19-16 lead.
  • There were two lead changes and five ties in the first quarter alone.
  • Paige Emborsky hit a three with 4:40 left in the second quarter to put ACU up 36-31. But UAB made their run shortly after.
  • ACU got it to within two points, trailing 51-49, with 6:04 left in the third, but back-to-back quick buckets from UAB push the Blazers lead to 56-49.
  • Madi Miller then went on a RUN. The junior converted a three-point play with 4:26 left in the third to get it to within 56-51. She then got a steal, went, in transition, and got another and-one to cut it to one, 56-55.
  • UAB then went on a 7-0 run to lead 63-55 with two minutes left in the third period.

Stat Pack

  • Adams' 26 points and 12 rebounds are both career highs. She has recorded 12 rebounds on three separate occasions in her career. The 12 field goals made are also a career-best and ties a Division I program record. She did it all while playing for 39 of the 40 minutes.
  • ACU shot an uncharacteristic 4-25 from the three-point line. It is their lowest number of makes in a game since they hit four against Central Arkansas on March 2, 2019.
  • Miller finished with 18 points, with 10 coming at the free throw line. The 10 makes and 12 attempts at the stripe are both career-highs for the junior. Miller also finished with three steals.
  • Anna McLeod tallied nine points and fouled out in the fourth quarter.
  • Mraz recorded seven points and dished out a team-high four assists.
We were not good defensively today. We have to take pride in our defense. And if we aren't hitting shots, we have to get stops on the other end. We did not do those things today.
