ABILENE  – Abilene Christian football plays its 2020 home opener Saturday vs. its longtime in-state and Lone Star Conference rivals from Angelo State. The game will kickoff at 3:05 p.m. and be live streamed on ESPN+ in addition to being broadcast locally on 98.1 FM - The Ticket.

ACU trails its all-time series 21-28-1 vs. the Rams despite having won 10 of the last 12 meetings dating back to 2002. The Wildcats won their 2018 meeting here at Wildcat Stadium, 41-24, a game in which Josh Fink caught two touchdown passes from Luke Anthony and Abilene native Oscar Hernandez booted a pair of field goals in addition to four PATs.

For Angelo State, this is the Rams final football game of the 2020 fall season. They are looking to snap a two-game losing skid and end the season at .500 with a win. ASU earlier this year fell to SFA 31-12 before West Texas A&M avenged an earlier loss, defeating the Rams 34-27 in their most recent game on Oct. 24. The Rams won their first meeting against the Buffs in the season opener, 21-10.

ACU won its first game of the fall Halloween afternoon at Mercer (FCS), 20-17, on Blair Zepeda's game-winning field goal as time expired. This victory also served as the 500th for the program now in its 99th season, and 90th for head coach Adam Dorrel.

In addition to Zepeda's two field goals, Peyton Mansell completed over 75 percent of his passes including a 4th-and-9 touchdown strike to Kobe Clark midway through the fourth quarter, and Lionell ‘LJ’ McConnell caught nine passes for 115 yards. Clark also caught nine passes, while freshman Jermiah Dobbins ran for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Here are a few things fans need to know to be prepared for this and next Saturday. Fans can also find more details at acusports.com/tickets.

  • Stadium capacity is limited to 50%, so fans are encourage to purchase tickets in advance. Single-game tickets will be available on Gameday, but sales will end once we reach capacity limits.
  • As with all ACU events on campus this year, each attendee is required to wear a face mask and practice physical distancing. Additional measures are being taken to provide for a safe and healthy environment at home games like changes to concession items, regular cleaning of high traffic areas and multiple hand sanitizer stations positioned around the stadium.

ADAM DORREL PRESS CONFERENCE

Our guys are really excited to be home, a lot of their families haven’t had a chance to see them play, brothers and sisters, so obviously they’re going to get a chance to play here and play in front of their friends, it’s very exciting. College football is awesome and college football at home is even cooler. Just to be in your own locker room and sleep in your own bed the night before a game so our guys are very excited so hopefully that opportunity is a great one for us and we play really hard.
