Corpus Christi in town Wednesday for ACUWBB rematch

ABILENE – Break out your Birkenstocks, Docs, and colored plaid flannels for 90s Night at Moody Coliseum Wednesday night when Abilene Christian women's basketball plays host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tip off between the Wildcats and Islanders is set for 6 p.m., and will be live streamed on ESPN + with Zach Carlyle handling the play-by-play.

This is the second of two regular-games played this season between ACU and Corpus Christi. The Wildcats MMMbopped the Islanders, 72-68, back on Jan. 30 as juniors Dominique Golightly and Breanna Wright were Livin' La Vida Loca with a combined seven points over the final 45 seconds. A No Doubt trey from Golightly put her side up 68-64, and even though the Islanders twice made it a one-possession game on layups from Dalesia Booth and Emma Young, the Wildcats Vanilla Iced the win thanks to four-consecutive free throws by Wright.

ACU leads its all-time series vs. Islanders, 7-3, and are 4-1 against them at home.

You Oughta Know the Wildcats (17-8, 10-4) have won their last three games, and Saturday proved to be One Sweet Day as their 86-66 victory over Southeastern La. clinched them a spot in the Southland Conference Championship Tournament for the second-consecutive year. ACU also remains tied for third place with Nicholls, and is 1.5 games up on Sam Houston State (9-6).

It was a Bittersweet Symphony for Southeastern Saturday, as the Wildcats led by as many as 25 points and were never seriously challenged as they forced 16 turnovers and scored 16 points off those Lady Lion miscues. Golightly led four Wildcats in double figures with 19 points (6 of 9 shooting from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range). Lexie Ducat had 18 points and seven rebounds, while Wright had 15 points (3 of 4 shooting from 3-point range) and Sara Williamson added 11 points and eight assists.

Golightly's En Vogue performance resulted in her being named a honorable mention for Southland Conference Player of the Week, and Williamson's 5-of-6 effort moved her into seventh-place nationally (first in the Southland) with a .619 field-goal percentage.

The Islanders (13-12) are No Scrubs either as they are part of the playoff picture with a sixth-place record of 7-7 that has them 3.0 games behind the Wildcats and Nicholls, and 3.0 games up on ninth-place Northwestern State (4-10) with four left to play.

Corpus last week played the two best teams in the Southland at home, and started with a 46-44 upset of Stephen F. Austin, unfortunately they hit a Wonderwall Saturday in losing to Lamar, 72-47.

The Islanders are averaging 62.4 points per game on .393 shooting, and pull down an average of 40.6 rebounds per game with Alexes Bryant leading them in that category (10.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg). Booth is averaging 11.9 ppg behind a .413 field-goal percentage.
