ABILENE -- Abilene Christian golf posted its lowest score of three rounds Tuesday at New Mexico State's Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate with a 1-over 285, but the Wildcats had to settle for third place of nine teams as Wichita State completed the tournament at 3-under 849 and the host Aggies carded a third round 7-under 277 to finish at even par 852.
The Wildcats, which registered rounds of 288 and 291 Monday, completed the event at 12-over 862 to finish ahead of in-state rivals UTRGVÂ (+15), UTEPÂ (+20), UIW (+38) and Houston Baptist (+55).
Junior transfer
Jake Bay was the Wildcats' clubhouse leader at even par 213 as he fired off rounds of 70, 70 and 73 on the par-71 course to place sixth of 63 competitors, meanwhile, sophomore
Francisco Osio went from 29th to 10th thanks to a third round 3-under 68. Osio recorded six birdies Tuesday, including four over the back nine.
Alex Clouse was ACU's third-best finisher at 4-over 217, followed by
Logan Diomede (+7),
Zane Heusel (+11) and Daniel Siebert (+12), who was competing as an individual.
Wichita State's Dawson Lewis and New Mexico State's Aidan Thomas tied for first place at 6-under 207. Thomas had an incredible final round of 6-under 65 to move up six spots on the individual leaderboard. Lewis carded rounds of 67, 69 and 71.
The Wildcats return to the links in two weeks for their biggest tournament of the fall season, the Hoakalei Country Club Collegiate Invitational in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. The three-day tournament runs from Oct. 28 to 30.
