ABILENE—The Wildcats opened conference play 2-0 after hosting two matches in Moody Coliseum. ACU began the weekend with a sweep over UIW on Thursday night before battling it out with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday in a four-set win. ACU will look to continue their success on the road this weekend as they travel to McNeese and Lamar.
Wildcats weekend outlook
Abilene Christian came into conference play looking refreshed and ready for action after nine days off prior to the UIW game.
Kennedy Shelstead hit .500 for the weekend with 24 total kills, including a .727 hitting performance against UIW on Thursday.
Marybeth Sandercox continued her efficient hitting streak, hitting .429 or better in three straight games and four of her last five matches.
Madison Rohre has continued her solid play and is averaging 8.47 assists in her first season running the Wildcat offense. Sophomore,
Lindsey Toney has made great strides in her first season as a starter and has set career highs in both kills and digs, and notched her second double-double of the season over the past weekend.
Scouting the opponent
McNeese is 0-2 after the first weekend of conference play but they lead the conference in aces per set and are fourth in blocks per set. The Cowgirls were swept in their conference opener at Southeastern Louisiana, but battled in a five-set thriller that saw them fall 22-20 in the fifth set at Nicholls. McNeese puts a balanced offense on the floor with four different players averaging over two kills per set who have also contributed significant time on the floor. Three of the top ten players for aces per set in the Southland are from McNeese, with Regan Stiawalt leading the way with 0.61/set.
Lamar also sits at 0-2 after the first weekend of conference play. The Cardinals faced UNO and Southeastern Louisiana to open their Southland schedule falling in four sets in both matches. Lamar is another tough serving team, currently ranked just behind McNeese for aces per set. The team also had a long break coming into conference play after their final tournament of the season was canceled. With the long break, they are currently on a four-game losing streak and will look to break that at home. The Cardinals also bring a balanced offensive attack with four different contributing players totaling two or more kills per set.
