Allie Hackett wins 10,000 meters at Southland meet

SAN ANTONIO — After severe rain and thunderstorms delayed all but the men's and women's 10,000m at the 2018 Southland Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Alexandria Hackett of Abilene Christian and Lamar's Jamie Crowe emerged as the weekend's first two winners.

In the women's race, Schoneborn led from the onset and relinquished the lead to teammates Cynthia Quiroga and Valentina Campos for multiple laps through the middle stretch. As the lead group crossed 10 laps to go however, the Hackett twins of Abilene Christian and Schoneborn comfortably broke away from the pack. Alexandria narrowly led the way, followed by Schoneborn and Michaela. As the laps wound down, Alexandria and Schoneborn carved out a sizable lead of their own, and on the back stretch of the final lap, Hackett unloaded for a gold medal finish (36:22.06), nearly seconds ahead of Schoneborn (36:28.05). Michaela Hackett took third in 36:49.90. It is Alexandria Hackett's second outdoor 10K title in three years, having won gold in 2016.

On the men's side, it was Nathan Jones of McNeese and Lamar's Jamie Crowe who built a solid deficit as they moved ahead of the pack by the halfway point. The pair were virtually stride-for-stride until the final lap sounded, when Crowe unleashed a monster final 400m, taking gold with a time of 31:01.94. Jones took silver (31:09.82), followed by Markus Schweikert (31:15.41).

Day two gets underway Saturday with men's combined events starting at 9 a.m. CT and women's combined events at 9:30 a.m. Field event finals begin at 10 a.m. while running trials are slated for 3 p.m. to 7:05 p.m. The women's and men's 3,000m steeplechase finals will cap the day at 8 p.m. and 8:20 p.m., respectively.
