THIBODAUX, La. – Abilene Christian tennis began its 2018 Southland Conference schedule Monday with a a doubleheader sweep of Nicholls. The men won 6-1 in lifting their season record to 9-7, while the women – winners of four-straight duals – improved to 7-3.
The Wildcats combined to win four of six doubles matches with one left unfinished, and collected nine singles victories.
ACU especially was strong in the upper half of its lineups. No. 1 and 2 line brothers Josh and
Jonathan Sheehy beat their Colonel opponents in straight sets. Josh topped Oleksander Podgursky, 6-4, 6-1, and Jon doubled up Alvaro Barranco, 6-3, 6-3.
The Sheehy brothers lead their team with identical 9-5 singles records.
On the women's side, it was senior
Lucile Pothier scoring her sixth-consecutive win at No. 1 after coming back from a set down to beat Stephanie Barnett, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, while at No. 2, senior
Whitney Williams battled past Lingfeng Gu, 6-1, 7-5.
Williams has won her last four singles contests, as has freshman
Ileana Mocciola who won by retirement over Anastasia Kuzevanova, 6-2. And at No. 5, rookie
Nini Memishishi won her team-leading eighth match of the spring, silencing Changwei Wei, 6-0, 6-1.
The men's team additionally won at the No. 3-6 lines. Seniors
Henry Adams at No. 4 and
Hunter Holman at No. 6 each won in three-set super tiebreakers after dropping the second sets, while their classmate
Paul Michael Domanski recorded a 6-0, 7-5 triumph over Lewis Cox at No. 5.
The Wildcats are back at home this Friday, March 2. The women play host to Houston at 10 a.m., while the men begin their dual vs. Rice at 11:44 a.m.
