ABILENE – Abilene Christian distance coach Jarvis Jelen Thursday canceled the inaugural ACU Wildcat Open due to heavy rains this week that have saturated much of the Big Country.
Saturday's slate of races was to have featured eight competitions featuring high school teams from all over the state. However, with more rain expected in the weekend forecast Jelen was left with little choice other than to cancel the event.
"Unfortunately, due to the heavy rains this week and continued rain today (Thursday) we are cancelling the ACU XC Wildcat Open," he said in an email to coaches. "The course and parking area are in very poor condition and will most likely only get worse over the next couple days."
ACU's cross country teams are off from competition until Oct. 14 when they head to Louisville, Ky. for NCAA DI Pre-Nationals. The Wildcats will then play host to the Southland Conference Championships on Friday, Oct. 27.
