ABILENE – Abilene Christian men's tennis won all five flights between singles and doubles at its annual Walmart Open, which featured teams from TCU, McMurry and Hardin-Simmons this past weekend.
The Wildcats accumulated 35 victories between the five brackets and lost only one match against another school – a semifinal match in Flight 1 doubles between Hunt / Weinkam of HSU and
Henry Adams /
Jonathan Sheehy (8-4). Hunt and Weinkam (HSU) were then defeated by sophomore Niko Moceanu / senior
Paul Michael Domanski in the finals, 8-4.
ACU won 13 matches overall vs. the Cowboys, seven vs. the War Hawks, and five vs. the Horned Frogs. The remaining Wildcat victories were either against themselves or unattached competitors.
All three singles finals pitted the Wildcats against one another, as did the championship match in Flight 2 doubles, where
Brad Gleason and Lawson edged
Joaquin Delgado and
Jackson Fine, 8-6. Delgado earlier won the Flight 3 singles title over Gleason, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, for his second singles title of the fall. He also was victorious at New Mexico State's Aggie Invitational.
Further up the flights, Moceanu triumphed over Adams in the top bracket, 6-2, 6-1, and at No. 2 singles, Domanski topped classmate
Hunter Holman, 7-6 (3), 6-2.
Saturday also marked the last matches for ACU at the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif., where both junior
Josh Sheehy and senior Lucile Pothier were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. Sheehy lost his match to former LSU Tiger and current UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Simon Freund, 6-3, 6-3, while Pothier fell for the second-consecutive year to Denver's Julia O'Loughlin, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-0.
