ABILENE – Abilene Christian junior
Lucile Pothier was selected as the Southland Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. All Player of the Week awards are presented by UniversalCoin.com.
A native of Mouxy, France, Pothier earned four wins on the week while improving to 15-4 overall and 10-1 in Southland singles competition. She won both of her matches at No. 2 singles, where she is 5-1 on the spring. First she topped Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Jelena Dzinic, 6-3, 6-3 before defeating Stephen F. Austin's Darinka Tiboldi 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 10-2 on Saturday in the season finale.
At No. 1 doubles, Pothier and teammate
Whitney Williams won 6-2 versus the Islanders and 6-3 against SFA. Pothier finished the spring 9-1 vs. conference doubles opponents and is 12-2 overall with Williams, which includes a 7-0 mark against Southland opposition.
ACU's win over SFA tied the Wildcats for second place in the Southland Conference with Central Arkansas and Lamar at 8-3. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the league's regular-season title at 10-1.
Sophomore men's tennis player Sebastian Langdon received honorable mention for Southland Conference Player of the Week. He helped the Wildcats clinch a share of the league's regular-season championship after beating Corpus Christi's Gonzalo Achondo, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6), last Wednesday.
The ACU men, Lamar Cardinals and Islanders all finished the spring with 4-1 conference records.
Next up for the Wildcats is a week-long trip to Ventura, Calif., for the Ojai Tennis Tournament, which runs from April 26-30. Pothier is a two-time doubles champion at The Ojai.
Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
