ABILENE – Abilene Christian's men's and women's tennis teams continued their hot streaks at the Eager Tennis Center Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of New Orleans. The men were 6-1 winners over the Privateers, while the women won a 4-3 nail biter with Lucille Pothier winning the match-clinching point at No. 2.
The ACU women jumped out to a 3-0 lead with victories from
Jordan Henry and
Autumn Crossnoe following a sweep of doubles. Henry came close to pitching her second straight shutout at No. 6, beating Yasmine Rashad, 6-1, 6-0, and Crossnoe doubled up Brittany Johnson at No. 5, 6-3, 6-3. Crossnoe's and Henry's winning streaks are now at four and three games, respectively.
The Wildcats also flew through doubles. The No. 1 and 3 teams of Pothier and
Whitney Williams, and Crossnoe / Jordan each won by the same 6-2 score, and the No. 2 duo of
Sarah Eleanor Adams and
Erin Walker blanked Trang Dao and Rashad, 6-0.
The momentum soon shifted, however, in UNO's favor. Dao topped Walker at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4 to break the shutout, and then Williams dropped a hard-fought match at No. 3 to Anna Segarra Rius, 7-5, 6-2. The Privateers tied the score at 3-3 after Claudette Gilhespie topped Adams at No. 4, 6-3, 6-4.
With the score knotted, everyone's focus shifted to the No. 2 court and it was there that Pothier held off Anja Luethi, 6-4, 6-4, for her 10th consecutive win that kept her unbeaten in conference play at 7-0. The Wildcat junior went 11-0 vs. Southland opposition last season, and was 7-4 against them as a freshman.
The men's score was a bit more lopsided but each of the six singles matches either went to a third set, tiebreaker or included a 7-5 score. ACU additionally won the doubles point in efficient fashion with the No. 1 and 3 duos each winning, 6-1.
Henry Adams and Nico Agritelley won their ninth match this spring at the top line, and
Sebastian Langdon and
Jonathan Sheehy evened their season record at 2-2 with their second-straight win.
The Wildcats showed off their determination and resolve throughout singles.
Josh Sheehy rallied from a set down to beat UNO's Jeffrey Hsu, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, while his younger brother, Jonathan, edged Federica Boscarino at No. 2, 6-4, 7-5. The Sheehy brothers have now won their last nine combined singles matches, and Josh is tied for the team lead with 13 victories – all of which have come at No. 1.
Junior
Hunter Holman also won his 13th match of the spring today, beating Nicolas Kramer at No. 4, 6-1, 7-6, and
Nico Agritelley had a three-set comeback at No. 3, topping Federico Staksrud, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
At No. 5, Adams won his fourth-straight match, beating Luis Albuquerque in a three-set tiebreaker 6-4, 6-7 (1), 11-9, but at No. 6, it was Giacomo Adoncecchi who prevailed over Langdon, 6-7 (8), 6-4, 10-6 to break ACU's bid for the shutout.
The ACU men are back in action the weekend of April 7 and 8, playing host to Lamar and Midwestern State. The women are on the road next weekend at Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin.
