NATCHITOCHES, La. - Abilene Christian women's basketball is back on the court Saturday at 1 p.m. to battle Northwestern State for the second time in a week. The Wildcats defeated the Lady Demons last Saturday at Moody Coliseum, 79-57, but they are winless in two previous trips to Prather Coliseum.
Tip off between the Wildcats and Northwestern State is 1 p.m. The game will air in Abilene on 102.7 FM – The Bear due to a conflict with ACU Baseball, which can be heard on 98.1 FM – The Ticket.
ACU (16-8, 10-2 Southland) is less than 24 hours removed from a memorable 80-73 victory Thursday night at Stephen F. Austin. The Wildcats trailed early in this contest by deficits of seven and 10 points, but tied the scored at 13 at the end of the first quarter and remained deadlocked with the Ladyjacks at 31 going into halftime.
ACU grabbed its first significant lead (nine points) of the game early in the fourth quarter after
Lizzy Dimba buried a trey on the Wildcats first possession, but SFA battled back to tie the score three times and would take a one-point lead, 63-62, with four minutes remaining in regulation. The Wildcats responded with an 8-0 run in a span of 1:20 to retake the lead, 70-63, and then went ahead by eight on a
Suzzy Dimba 3-pointer with 46 seconds left.
Suzzy and Lizzy Dimba each scored 19 points and combined for 17 rebounds, while guard
Alexis Mason finished with 24 points and a program-record tying eight 3-pointers. Mason is the fourth Wildcat with eight triples in a single game, joining Renata Marquez, Alex Guiton and Ashley King.
The Wildcats additionally shot 50 percent from the arc for the second time this season against a Southland Conference opponent (Central Arkansas) and limited the Ladyjacks to 41.7 percent shooting (25-60) and only two bench points. ACU's defense also did a good job against starters Kennedy Harris (6 pts.) and Brentney Branch (5 pts.), but struggled to contain Stevi Parker, who posted a 31-point / 18-rebound double-double. Parker is only the second Wildcat opponent (Briana Walker, UTA – 32) during their DI history to score over 30 points, and her rebound total is the highest by any ACU foe since Tarleton State's Kiara Wright pulled down 23 in Feb. of 2013 – ACU's final season as a DII school in the Lone Star Conference.
In their last game vs. the Lady Demons, the Wildcats hit 13 3-pointers for the fourth time this year to tie a season high. Mason buried 6-of-14 attempts to give her 23 points while Suzzy and
Lizzy Dimba each reached double figures with 12 and 17 points, respectively.
Sydney Shelstead recorded the most rebounds with 12.
This win snapped a two-game winning streak for Northwestern State, but in its lone game since then, the Lady Demons (12-12, 6-7 Southland) whipped Southeastern Louisiana Thursday night, 89-71, in improving to 11-2 at Prather Coliseum. Northwestern's 11 home wins are tied for the second most in the Southland with UCA and ACU. Lamar is a perfect 13-0 this season at the Montagne Center.
Lady Demons Beatrice Attura and Cheyenne Brown each scored 30 points vs. the Lady Lions and Libba Gilliam chipped in 14 points with eight rebounds. Brown was 12-of-17 from the floor, and Attura knocked down 8-of-15 attempts along with all 12 of her free throw attempts.
