Four soccer players named to SLC All-Academic team

FRISCO – Four Abilene Christian soccer players Wednesday received Southland Conference All-Academic honors the league. Junior Dylan Owens and senior Megan Baer were voted first team and senior Chloe Fifer and sophomore Shay Johnson earned second-team honors.
The Willard, Mo. native received an automatic first-team selection after being voted all-conference first team forward. She holds a 3.77 grade point average in advertising and public relations. Owens finished the season tied for fifth in points with 17, averaging 0.85 points per game, scoring eight goals, five of them being game winners and dishing out two assists. The forward was named Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 10 for the first time in her career.
Baer started all 20 games for the Wildcats, scoring four goals including ones in bac- to-back matches against Central Arkansas and Northwestern State. The senior tied teammate Samantha Vestal for the team lead in assists with three. The San Antonio native holds a 3.91 GPA in communication disorders.
Fifer secured her second consecutive Southland All-Academic citation. The McKinney native recorded six points this fall, scoring two goals and assisting on two. The senior, who started all 20 matches for the Wildcats, holds a 3.87 GPA in interdisciplinary studies.
Johnson spilt time between midfield and defense scoring five goals and collecting one assist in 1747 minutes of play. The Coppell native owns a 3.90 GPA majoring in communication disorders.
Southland Conference All-Academic Teams are voted upon by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each school. Student-Athletes of the Year are voted upon by an awards committee which consists of one administrator from each member school. Voting for one's own athletes is not permitted.
To be eligible for all-academic distinction, an athlete must hold a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average through the semester prior to the sport's championship, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating school prior to the current season, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions during the most recently completed season.
