NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The ACU Wildcats will be back on the floor Sunday afternoon when they take on Lipscomb in the second game of an in-season home-and-home series against ACU's sister Church of Christ institution.
ACU's 1 p.m. visit to Allen Arena marks the first time the Wildcats have played Lipscomb in Nashville since Dec. 5, 1958, when the Wildcats took an 85-69 win over the Bisons. The Wildcats lead the all-time series, 5-3, although Lipscomb snapped a three-game ACU winning streak in the series on Nov. 20 when the Bisons walked out of Moody Coliseum with a 75-67 win in the first game of this season's two-game series.
After Sunday afternoon's game, the Wildcats (7-3) will be back home Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Arlington Baptist in the final non-Division I game of the season. ACU will close out the non-conference portion of the season next Friday when it takes on Texas Tech at 2 p.m. in Lubbock.
Here are some notes in advance of Sunday's game:
• ACU and Central Arkanas are the only two teams in the Southland Conference to rank in the top six in the league in both field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense. ... The Wildcatrs leads the league in field goal percentage (49.7 percent) and are sixth in the league in field goal percentage defense (43.8). ... The Bears are fifth in offensive field goal percentage (46.0) and fourth in defensive field goal percentage (42.3 percent).
• After struggling at the free throw line in 2016-17 (last in the league at 66.2 percent on the season), the Wildcats are third in the league through 10 games in 2017-18, converting free throws at a 70.9 percent clip.
• ACU and Stephen F. Austin are the only two teams in the league to have three players ranked in the top 17 in the league in scoring. ... Sophomore center Jalone Friday ranks seventh in the league (16.0 ppg), followed by junior forward Jaren Lewis in 13th (14.4 ppg) and graduate transfer guard Tevin Foster in 17th place (13.1 ppg).
• Lewis leads the Southland Conference in field goal percentage (62.2 percent in the early going of the season), which ranks him 36th in the country. ... He's also eighth in the league in rebounding (6.5 per game) and 13th in free throw percentage (77.8 percent).
• ACU is in its fifth year of playing an NCAA Division I schedule (first year it's eligible for post-season tournament play) and a number of Division I career records have aready fallen or about to be broken by members of this year's team. ... Former Wildcat guard
Parker Wentz scored 1,062 career points (2013-16) during his career and is the Wildcats' all-time leading scorer in the Division I era. ... However, Franklin has scored 857 career points and is second on the list, while Lewis has scored 810, which is third. ... Friday has scored 517 points and is seventh on the Division I-era scoring list.
• Franklin is closing in on Wentz's record for career field goals in the Division I era. ... Wentz made 333 career field goals, while Franklin enters Sunday afternoon's contest with 331 career field goals. ... Franklinis also the program's NCAA Division I era leader in assists with 242.
• Friday has overtaken
Parker Wentz as the all-time leading 3-point field goal shooter in ACU history, at least by percentage. ... In a little more than one season, Friday is 52 for 120 from beyond the arc (43.3 percent), just past the old mark of 42.8 percent posted by Wentz, who was 258 for 603 in his career. ... Current Wildcats Hayden Farquhar (47 for 120 for 39.2 percent) and Isaiah Tripp (50 for 133 for 37.6 percent) rank 8th and 13th, respectively, on ACU's career 3-point field goal percentage list.
