ABILENE - Abilene Christian volleyball completes its season-long nine-match road trip this weekend with the start of its fourth Southland Conference season. Thursday, the Wildcats will play the defending league champions from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday they'll battle their old rivals from Incarnate Word.

ACU is coming off another hard-luck tournament appearance at Florida Atlantic, where they went 0-4 against the Owls and teams from UTRGV, Tulane and Florida Gulf Coast. The team, however, did receive two individual honors as both sophomore outside hitter Jacey Smith and freshman libero Amanda Chapa were voted onto the Owls Classic All-Tournament Team.

Smith scored 51.0 points through four matches and 16 sets at FAU, averaging 2.56 kills and 1.31 digs per set. She posted only six kills in the tournament finale vs. FGCU Eagles, but had 12 vs. the Owls, 13 against UTRGV and 10 vs. Tulane.

Smith currently ranks seventh in the league with 2.94 kills per set, while Chapa ranks fifth with a 3.89 digs per set average.

Chapa averaged 3.69 digs per set while in Florida with 19 coming vs. FGCU. Earlier in the tournament she dug out 13 attacks vs. FAU, 15 vs. UTRGV and 12 vs. Tulane, and five of her seven points during the weekend were via service ace.

Additional Wildcats ranked among the league leaders include sophomore setter Kendall Bosse, who is third with 8.29 assists per set, and sophomore middle blocker Lauren Walker, who stands in fifth place with 1.10 blocks per set.

The Islanders began Southland Conference competition Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Sam Houston State that evened their season record at 6-6. Among those six wins are three against common opponents with ACU, as Corpus twice defeated UTRGV (3-2, 3-1) and topped UT Arlington, 3-1.

The Cardinals' match against ACU is their conference opener as they come into this weekend with a 4-9 mark in non conference play. UIW's wins thus far have come against Central Arkansas, Alcorn State, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern. They have lost their last four matches overall, and are on a two-match series losing streak vs. the Wildcats.
