ABILENE - Abilene Christian's four-week tournament run reaches its end this weekend in Boca Raton, Fla., where the Wildcats will take part in the Owls Classic hosted by Florida Atlantic.
The Wildcats play the Owls Friday at 10:30 a.m. central time followed by a rematch with UTRGV at 3:30 p.m. The Vaqueros beat ACU in three sets last weekend at Texas Tech's tournament and finished 2-1 during their stay in Lubbock.
ACU's Saturday slate includes an 11:30 a.m. / 3:30 p.m. doubleheader vs. Tulane and Florida Gulf Coast. The Green Wave is on a three-match winning streak that includes a sweep of Clemson, while the Eagles have won six-consecutive matches, the most recent of which was a 3-2 decision over Indiana.
FAU comes into its tournament with a 4-6 record after losing three straight at the Central Florida Classic to teams from UCF, LSU and Seattle. However, the Owls played well the previous weekend at South Florida, topping Georgetown, Stetson and Western Carolina.
The Wildcats won their first match of last week, beating UT Arlington in a 3-2 nailbiter Tuesday at Moody Coliseum, but couldn't carry that momentum into the weekend at Texas Tech. Individually, ACU was led in Lubbock by sophomore outside hitter
Jacey Smith on offense as she averaged 2.22 kills per set, and by sophomore
Lauren Walker on defense. Walker finished with 13 blocks for a 1.44 per set average, while freshman libero
Amanda Chapa dug out 3.78 attacks.
Smith is tops on ACU for the season with 131.0 points, and her 2.97 kills ranks her seventh in the Southland Conference. Additionally, Walker is third in the league with 1.12 blocks per set, setter
Kendall Bosse ranks third with 8.53 assists, and Chapa is fifth in digs at 4.14.
