ACU Soccer and UTEP battle to scoreless tie

ABILENE - Abilene Christian soccer and UTEP played their way to a tie for the second time in four meetings as Sunday's contest at Elmer Gray Stadium ended in a 0-0 deadlock.
The Wildcats (0-0-1) were the aggressors for much of the match, finishing with 23 shots over 110 minutes, but the Miners (1-0-1) responded to the endless barrage of chances with nine saves and six blocks. Goalkeeper Alyssa Palacios stopped seven shots while two others were swept off the goal line by her defensive teammates.
ACU freshman Brooke Lenz had her header kicked away at the far post, and at the start of the second overtime, Dylan Owens was robbed of the game-winner by a UTEP defender who got the tip of her shoe on the ball. Owens fired three shots in 88 minutes of play, while Snider and Lenz tied for the team lead with four and three shots on goal.
Snider played a complete game along with goalkeeper Sydney Newton and freshman defender Shay Johnson.
Newton faced 14 shots, but was only forced to make three saves - most of which were routine, and the defense permitted only two corner kicks - the last of which came in the 48th minute.
By comparison, ACU recorded 11 corner kicks including one in each of the overtime periods.
Sunday's scoreless tie was ACU's first since Aug. 30 of last season when the Wildcats played UC Irvine in Austin, and it was the first on ACU's campus since the 2007 season finale vs. Texas Woman's.
The Wildcats' homestand resumes Friday with a 7 p.m. match vs. Oral Roberts of the Summit League.
