ABILENE – Abilene Christian women's tennis puts its undefeated home record on the line Saturday at 10 a.m. when the Wildcats play host to their Southland Conference rivals from Central Arkansas.
It's possible the match will be moved indoors to the Teague Center as the morning forecast calls for rain and a game-time temperature of 57 degrees.
ACU (17-6) is 7-0 on its home courts and is coming off a 3-1 road trip in which victories against Incarnate Word, Sam Houston and Lamar were followed by a tough 4-3 defeat at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which clinched the regular-season championship at 10-0. The Wildcats, meanwhile, are 2.5 games behind the Islanders at 7-2 and the visiting Bears are in eighth place at 5-5 after they lost 4-1 at Corpus Christi Thursday.
Prior to their loss vs. the Islanders, UCA (13-7) was on a five-match winning streak, beating teams from Sam Houston State, Texas State, UT Rio Grande Valley, Alcorn State and Incarnate Word.
ACU trailed the Islanders 4-0 before winning the final three matches. Sophomore
Lucile Pothier won her 13th straight and tied senior
Nada Marjanovic for the team lead with 19 victories after rallying from a set down to beat Judit Vives, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Sophomore
Whitney Williams then notched her 10th-consecutive victory by holding off Maider Martin 7-6, 1-6, 7-6.
With only two league matches left on the schedule, Pothier and Williams are two of only four Southland players (Dzinic and McNeese's Hannah Brett) who have started the spring 9-0 against league opposition.
Freshman
Jordan Henry notched the Wildcats' final point at No. 6, beating Kerry Galhos in a third-set tiebreak 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4).
Overall, ACU is 86-63 (.577) in singles and 55-32 (.632) in doubles. The Wildcats' doubles loss at Corpus Christi was their first since March 15, snapping a seven-match winning streak.
The Wildcats are 2-0 all-time vs. Central Arkansas. ACU won 4-0 at a neutral-site dual last year in Little Rock, and 6-1 at home in 2014.
