OJAI, Calif. – The top-seeded Abilene Christian duo of junior
Nico Agritelley and freshman Joshua Sheehy survived a three-set war Saturday in the men's doubles semifinals, setting up a championship match against their teammates
Jason Proctor and
Henry Adams Sunday at the 116th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament.
Their match will take place at 2:30 p.m. PT / 4:30 p.m. CT at historic Libbey Park.
Agritelley and Sheehy were given a first-round bye and Friday cruised past the quarterfinal opposition from Biola, 6-1, 6-0, but today they were presented a greater challenge in the Grand Canyon tandem of Justin Cvitanovic and Mathiey Rajaohah.
Agritelley and Sheehy appeared well on their way to the finals, winning the first set, 6-0, but the 'Lopes duo battled back to win set No. 2, 6-3, and pushed the Wildcats throughout the tiebreaker before falling, 10-8.
For Adams and Proctor, their tougher test came on Friday when they upset the second-seeded combination from GCU, Gregoire Balenci and Adrian Legarreta, in three sets. The Wildcats doubled up the 'Lopes in set No. 1, 6-3, but let the second set slip away, losing 6-7 (2). However, they went on to win the tiebreak, 10-8, and today prevailed over third-seeded Anthony Sena and Adriene Varenne of Hope, 6-1, 6-4.
The Wildcats also had a chance to make the singles championship an all-ACU affair, but both Proctor and sophomore
Hunter Holman lost their semifinal matches in straight sets to GCU's Legarreta and Felix Schueller.
Schueller – the tournament's No. 3 seed – beat Proctor 6-3, 6-4 after dispatching Agritelley in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Legarreta, meanwhile, defeated Holman, 6-0, 6-4.
ACU's five representatives at The Ojai went a combined 9-5 (.643) through four rounds of singles.
