HOUSTON - It took close to a month, but the Abilene Christian men's and women's tennis teams Saturday finally completed their long-delayed duals with New Orleans on the outdoor courts of Rice University and pummeled the Privateers in singles by final scores of 6-1 and 5-2.
For the ACU women, today's victory earned them second-place among 12 schools in the Southland Conference and clinched the program's 16th 20-win season under head coach
Hutton Jones. And for the Wildcat men, the 19 wins this spring were their most since 2012 and their 3-2 Southland record gave ACU its second winning record in three seasons as a DI program.
These duals first began March 18, but were postponed due to heavy rains following the completion of doubles. ACU won each of those points in taking a 1-0 lead into singles and continued to dominate the Privateers with the women winning at four positions and the men at five, including a walkover triumph for senior
Jason Proctor at No. 2.
Behind Proctor, junior
Nico Agritelley, sophomore
Hunter Holman and freshman
Sebastian Langdon all won in straight sets at the No. 3, 4 and 6 lines, while sophomore
Henry Adams came back from a set down to beat UNO's Nicolas Kramer at No. 5, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Adams finished the regular season with 13 wins, tying him for fourth on the team with classmate
Paul Domanski. Holman led all Wildcats with 18 victories and Agritelley won seven of his last 10 decisions to finish at 14-8.
Freshman
Josh Sheehy, unfortunately lost a three-set match at No. 1 to Jeffrey Hsu, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7, but still completed his rookie season with 16 wins at the top line.
On the women's side, no one could have asked for more out of sophomores
Lucile Pothier and
Whitney Williams - both of who went undefeated in conference singles competition at 11-0. Pothier clipped Trang Dao, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), at No. 3 for her 16th-consecutive win that kept her tied with senior
Nada Marjanovic for the team lead with 22 victories.
Williams, at No. 5, defeated Hafsa Laraibi, 6-4, 6-3, to keep her winning streak intact at 13 matches as she improved to 19-5.
Marjanovic also was victorious again at No. 4, trouncing Yasmine Rashad, 6-2, 6-1, and freshman
Jordan Henry doubled up Brittany Johnson, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6.
UNO earned its lone points at No. 1 and 2 singles with Anna Segarra Rius topping junior
Erin Walker, 6-3, 6-2, and senior
Kaysie Hermsdorf falling in three sets to Soledad Calderon, 3-6, 6-4, 13-11.
The Wildcats return to action once more next Thursday with the start of the four-day Ojai Tournament, which is played at several different locales in Ventura County, Calif. The ACU women made their debut there last spring and walked away with three championships, including a team title.
Walker is The Ojai's defending singles and doubles champion. She beat teammate
Brittney Reed for the singles crown, and teamed up with Pothier to beat Hermsdorf and Reed for the doubles title.
Agritelley advanced the furthest of all the Wildcat men last season, reaching the semifinals of The Ojai's singles bracket.
