ABILENE - The 74th-ranked Abilene Christian men's tennis team posted near-perfect team results on a spectacular 79-degree afternoon Friday in the Big Country, beating Temple and McMurry by scores of 6-1 and 7-0 at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.
The Wildcats are 13-5 following the doubleheader sweep, while the Owls and War Hawks are 11-3 and 5-3, respectively.
Despite the appearance of the final score, today's dual between the Wildcats and Owls was a battle that lasted close to four hours as three of the singles matches were decided in three sets and all won by the home team.
Freshman No. 1
Josh Sheehy knocked off Santiago Canete, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, for his team-leading 13th victory of the spring, while at No. 5, sophomore
Paul Domanski improved to 10-5 overall and 8-2 over his last 10 decisions in coming back from a set down to beat Florian Mayer, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomore
Henry Adams also was tested at No. 6, but was able to push his winning streak to three matches following a 7-6 (11-9), 4-6, 6-2 triumph over Filip Stipcic.
Further up the lineup, junior
Nico Agritelley quieted Nicolas Paulus, 6-4, 6-0, and sophomore
Hunter Holman continued to impress with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Uladzimir Dorash. Holman has won his last three matches and is currently second on the team with 11 victories.
ACU's doubles results vs. the Owls were 6-4, 6-1 and 6-2.
The Wildcats' modified their lineup vs. McMurry, moving Agritelley into the top spot followed by senior
Jason Proctor and Holman, while the No. 4 to 6 positions were claimed by senior
Marco Bensley, sophomore
Brad Gleason and freshman
Cole Lawson.
All won in straight sets as ACU lifted its combined singles record to 68-37 (.648), and in doubles, the Wildcats won 7-6, 6-0 and 6-3.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday, March 13 for the start of a Spring Break trip that will take them to Hattiesburg, Miss., for duals vs. Jackson State and Southern Mississippi, and to Thibodaux and New Orleans, La. for conference matches vs. Nicholls and the Privateers of UNO.
