Grant Boone calling the play-by-play action.
ACU concluded the first half of Southland Conference action Tuesday night with a 79-72 win over a Houston Baptist team that entered the game at 8-0 in the league and riding a 10-game winning streak. The Wildcats led by 21 points at halftime and by as many as 25 points in the second half before the Huskies closed to as close as three points with less than one minute to play.
But freshman guard
Jaylen Franklin hit a driving layup and freshman forward
Jaren Lewis hit a pair of free throws – all within the final 25 seconds – to seal the win for the Wildcats. With a 5-4 league record, ACU already has more conference wins through nine games this season than it had the entire 2014-15 season (4-14 in league play), and the 10 overall wins (10-12 overall mark) tie the number of wins ACU had last year in a 10-21 campaign.
Franklin leads the Wildcats in scoring at 15.6 points per game, which is sixth in the league. Senior guard
Parker Wentz is averaging 9.7 ppg, while Lewis is averaging 9.2 ppg.
Wentz is in the top five in the Southland in both 3-point field goals made (54 for fifth) and 3-point field goal percentage (second at 47.8 percent).
