Nichols, Thompson lead Wildcat XC at Incarnate Word

ABILENE - Sophomore Travis Nichols and junior Gabby Thompson were the lead runners for Abilene Christian's men's and women's cross country teams Saturday at the 11th-annual UIW Invitational at Live Oak Park.
Nichols completed the 8K course with a 10th-place time of 24:46 as the Wildcats finished fifth of six schools with 112 points. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the men's race over Texas State by seven points, 41-48. Host Incarnate Word was a distant third with 75 points followed by UT Rio Grande Valley with 98. Texas Christian rounded out the field with 145 points.
There were 56 individual runners in the men's race and the Wildcats had two other runners finish among the upper half of the standings. Senior Sterlen Paul placed 13th in 25:09.4 and Drew Cummings was 16th in 25:14. Paul ran a 26:02 last time he was here in 2014.
The Wildcat women placed fifth of five teams with 119 points but Thompson posted a ninth-place 6K of 22:31 – a two-minute improvement from her previous appearance at Live Oak. Following Thompson were senior Sierra Bennett who clocked a mark of 23:48 to place 25th of 41 runners and freshman Natalie Jackson was 28th in 24:04.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi edged UTRGV for the women's team title, 41-46, followed by UIW with 50 points and Texas State with 97.
Saturday's individual champions were Corpus Christi's Morgan McCutchen (22:04.2) and UIW's Garrett Cortez (24:05.9).
The Wildcats return to action in 20 days for the Southland Conference Cross Country Championships. This year's host is Stephen F. Austin.
