Jacey Smith and
Kendall Bosse each received honorable mention citations for Southland Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week Monday as the Wildcats head to Beaumont for tomorrow's 7 p.m. match at Lamar.
The Cardinals enter this week at 3-13 overall with all three of their wins coming against league opposition, while the Wildcats (7-17) are tied for third place at 6-3 following a weekend homestand sweep of Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State. ACU won each of those matches in five sets, and the Wildcats' win over the Ladyjacks was their first since 1983.
The team hit a combined .208 vs. the Ladyjacks and Bearkats with 12.8 kills per set. The Wildcats additionally delivered nine aces, blocked 16.5 shots and dug out 17.2 attacks as they extended their home winning streak to five matches.
Smith was the Wildcat's leading point scorer with 38 points on 34 kills, two aces and four blocks. She tallied 16 kills in ACU's first Southland conference win over Stephen F. Austin, including three in the final game – the last of which gave the Wildcats the lead for good – and in set three, she counted the game-winner among her five kills.
Two days later against Sam Houston State, Smith hit .275 with 18 kills and an ace as her final kill of the match gave ACU a somewhat confortable 13-10 lead in game five. Smith also was especially clutch in game two vs. the Bearkats, scoring four points during a game-ending 8-1 run that tied the match score at 1-1.
Bosse was a phenomenal two-way player for the Wildcats this past weekend. Overall, she contributed 15.5 points on 13 kills (.345 hitting %), but she also recorded 35 digs, got a hand in five blocks, and assisted on 98 successful attacks.
Twenty of her digs came against SFA, which was held to a .159 hitting percentage.
She and senior
Lexi Mercier blocked two shots together in game five vs. Sam Houston State. The first of their combo blocks tied the score at 5-5 and the second brought the Wildcats to match point at 14-12.
Mercier's stat line from this past weekend included nine blocks (three solo) and 24 kills, while her fellow middle blocker
Lauren Walker hit .429 with 25 kills and a team-best four service aces. Walker also was part of seven blocks as she totaled 33 points.
Freshman libero
Amanda Chapa had a fine weekend as well, finishing with 48 digs and 11 assists. She currently ranks fourth in the Southland with 4.45 digs per set, while Walker (1.10) and Mercier (1.06) are fourth and seventh in blocks.Â
Smith's kill total moved her up to ninth among the conference leaders with a 2.83 per set average and Bosse remains 10th in both assists (7.41) and service aces (0.27) per set.
