BASTROP, Texas - With senior Corbin Renner forced to withdraw from the Jim West Intercollegiate last night due to injury, the Abilene Christian Golf team played with its minimum four players Tuesday and finished 15th at the two-day, three-round tournament hosted by Texas State at the Wolfdancer Golf Club.
Renner made par (72) in round one before finishing 4-over 76 during his second go-round on the 7,205 yard course. The Little Rock, Ark., native was tied for 35th out of 80 players at the time of his withdrawal and two strokes behind team leader Dillon Vaughn, who carded a 1-over 73 in each of his first two rounds.
Unfortunately for Vaughn, he was unable to duplicate or lower his third-round score and ended up 5-over 77 today to finish tied for 36th at 7-over 223. His teammates - Kyle Karnei, Clarke Hudgins and Brandon Wilkins - also posted higher third rounds scores compared with what they recorded yesterday in round two, and the team ultimately finished 56 strokes over par at 920.
"It really hurt to lose our best player for the final round and play the with mininmum number of guys, because we just couldn't afford any additional mistakes," said head coach Tom Shaw. "But it was a good learning experience and our guys knew all their scores were going to count today ... Unforunately, we didn't have our best day overall but we'll learn from it and Corbin will be ready for conference and we'll hopefully get everyone healthy in the meantime."
Saint Mary's College (6-under 858) of the West Coast Conference held off the Southland Conference's Sam Houston State (5-under 859) by one stroke to win the team title, while Stephen F. Austin led by medalist Blake Pugh was a distant third at 3-over 867.
Pugh completed the third round with three birdies on the back nine to finish 3-under today and 9-under 207 for the tournament. Central Arkansas' Pep Angles and Sam Houston's Zach Cabra tied for second at 7-under 209.
Leading up to this week's tournament, Renner was ACU's individual leader at the previous four spring season events. He began the year with a win at the UTPA Classic followed by a 3-over 216 at the Bash at the Beach and third-place showing at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate (9-over 222). Last week on his home course in Little Rock, Renner once again carded the Wildcats' lowest score over three rounds - a 2-over 218, which tied him for 17th place at the UALR / First Tee Classic.
ACU Golf concludes its season in two weeks at the Southland Conference Championships, which are being hosted by the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas, April 20-22.
