ABILENE - Sophomore
Nico Agritelley Thursday was announced as one of only six Southland Conference competitors selected to its first team. A Dallas native, Agritelley posted a 19-7 singles record that included a 5-0 record vs. Southland opposition and 6-0 mark when competing at the No. 2 spot.
Agritelley was joined on the first team by Peter Nagy, Kevin Bettendroffer and Ricardo Mayagoitia of first-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and Lamar's Nikita Lis and Michael Feucht.
Agritelley defeated all his conference opponents in straight sets with the exception of Lamar's Jeandre Hoogenboezem, who lost to the Wildcats' second-year star in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 10-4. Additionally, of the seven defeats Agritelley suffered only three were in straight sets and two of those came when he was asked to play at the No. 1 position for the better part of the week.
After Agritelley fell to 89th-ranked AJ Catanzariti of No. 9 Texas A&M on March 15, he finished dual season on a team-best seven-match winning streak that included a victory over Southland second-team honoree Guillaume Rauseo of Corpus Christi, 6-2, 7-6 (6-2).
In non-conference competition Agritelley scored wins over opponents from established DI programs such as Troy, Murray State, Seattle, Xavier and Liberty. While on the doubles court he and his partners
Guilherme Gesser and
Henry Adams combined for 13 victories.
Agritelley is a three-time Southland Conference postseason honoree. Last year he made second-team singles and doubles (with
Jason Proctor).
The 2015 All-Southland Conference men's tennis teams are comprised of six first-team and six second-team singles members and three first-team and three second-team doubles squads. Teams are chosen by vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Recipients are placed on the teams by the number of votes received. Voting panelists are not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.
This is the third year for the league to recognize champions at each singles and doubles position. Conference champions must have played at least 50 percent of conference matches at that position. Results are based off winning percentage, then number of wins.
Agritelley and Wildcats begin play this morning at the 115th-Annual Ojai Invitational, which is their season-ending event.
