ACU women's basketball game notes (vs. Sam Houston State | Feb. 12, 2015)Live Stats | Video |
Audio ABILENE - Fewer losses this season have stung worse than the one Abilene Christian women's basketball experienced a few weeks back at the hands of Sam Houston State, but Thursday the Wildcats will have a chance to even the series when they take on the Bearkats at Johnson Coliseum at 6:30 p.m.
The game will air live on 98.1-FM The Ticket with
Grant Boone handling the play-by-play action.
ACU won its first game vs. Sam Houston State during its first year back in the Southland Conference and were 1:40 away from making it two straight until Shernise Robertston ignited an improbable comeback for the Bearkats with back-to-back three-pointers within a span of 15 seconds.
Robertson's fifth trey of the second half cut ACU's once seven-point lead (58-51) down to one (58-57) at the 1:15 mark and then the Bearkats took the lead for good on a Taylor Dorsey layup that followed a 10-second backcourt violation.
Over the next 50 seconds, the Wildcats would turn the ball over once more and miss a pair of 3-pointers while Robertson iced the victory with four free throws.
Right after that defeat, however, the Wildcats rattled off three-consecutive victories and won four of their next six with the lone defeats coming against first-place Lamar.
The Cardinals came back from a halftime deficit in each game vs. the Wildcats and were flawless from the free-throw line, going 15-for-15 in Beaumont and 12-of-12 five days later at Moody Coliseum. In doing so, Lamar became only the third ACU opponent since the 1999-00 season to make all their free throws in a single game, joining Kingsville (4-4 on Feb. 2, 2010), Texas Woman's (11-11 on Jan. 28, 2006) and Incarnate Word (10-10 on Nov. 29, 2005).
Saturday, the Wildcats snapped their two-game losing skid with their own second-half comeback vs. the Lions of Southeastern La. ACU trailed by six at the break, but came back to win thanks to 49 points in the paint as
Sydney Shelstead and Lizzy and
Suzzy Dimba combined for 49 of the Wildcats' 75 points.
Junior guard
Whitney West also shot well, scoring 14 points on 6-of-11 attempts with five assists, and in her first career start, freshman guard
Alyssa Echols tied her career high with eight points.
Defensively, ACU clamped down in the second half, allowing just 27 points and 29 percent shooting (9 of 31). And on the Lions' final two possessions of the game, the Wildcats got a big defensive rebound from
Lizzy Dimba and forced a turnover with 1.9 seconds remaining. West fell on the loose ball as time expired.
Sam Houston State comes into this week's contest 1.0 game ahead of ACU in the conference standings at 5-6 and 6-15 overall.
The Bearkats upset Stephen F. Austin, 65-64, following their win over the Wildcats, but then lost big to Lamar, 87-68, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 63-50, with a seven-point win over Houston Baptist pinched in between.
Robertson and Dorsey lead the Bearkats in scoring with 19.3 and 12.7 points per game, respectively, while Saundra Guillory is their leading rebounder with 6.4 per game.
