The Roadrunners and Wildcats are meeting for the third consecutive season and the first time in the Key City.
UTSA leads the all-time series 2-0. The Roadrunners edged the Wildcats, 63-58, in January of 2014, and won again, 70-57, a few months later. They were picked to finish seventh in Conference USA for this season despite returning eight letterwinners from last year's team.
Saturday's game is only the second for the season for UTSA as the Roadrunners opened their 2015-16 campaign with a 90-53 defeat on Nov. 14 at No. 11 Texas. The Wildcats, meanwhile, are off to a 1-1 start, following a 96-71 home win vs. Wayland Baptist with a loss Monday at Kansas State, 76-45.
Junior forward
Sydney Shelstead posted a double-double in both games and Monday was recognized by the Southland Conference with its Player of the Week Award, which was the first of her career. The native of Mineral Wells, Texas, posted 26 points and 12 rebounds vs. the Flying Queens, and registered 11 points / 11 rebounds two nights later in Manhattan, Kan.
Her 26 points were one shy of matching her career high from last season vs. Eastern Washington.
Junior guard
Alexis Mason also reached double figures in scoring at K-State, sinking four 3-pointers and a handful of free throws to finish with 17 points. She had 18 points vs. WBU in addition to six assists, while senior guard Whitney (West) Swinford chipped in 12 and tied a career high with seven assists.
All five Wildcat starters scored in double figures against Wayland Baptist, which also included
Lizzy Dimba pouring in 13 points and Suzzy contributing 10 points. ACU's six-woman bench scored the remaining 17 points led by sophomore
Sierra Allen (7) and rookie
McKenzie Martin (7). Allen made all three of her field goals.
Following Saturday's contest the Wildcats will play host to the University of the Southwest from Hobbs, N.M., Monday at 7 p.m. for the 600th game of
Julie Goodenough's head coaching career. They will then welcome Missouri Valley College on Black Friday at 2 p.m.
ACU is playing each of these schools for the first time in program history.
