Hermsdorf and Pothier into Round of 32 at USTA/ITA Texas Regionals

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Abilene Christian senior Kaysie Hermsdorf and sophomore Lucile Pothier each won their first two main draw singles matches and advanced into the Round of 32 Thursday during the first day of competition at the USTA/ITA Texas Regionals hosted by Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
 
Pothier knocked off Sam Houston State's Maria Garoz in the Round of 128, 6-2, 6-1, and later survived a three-round battle against Texas sophomore Dani Wagland, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6. Wagland competed in 20 dual matches last spring as a rookie for the Longhorns, going 7-13.
 
Pothier's next opponent is fifth-seeded and 50th-ranked Texas A&M Aggie Rutuja Bhosale, while Hermsdorf will face 14th-seeded freshman Alexandra Valenstein of Texas Tech. Bhosale made Second Team All-SEC as a sophomore in 2015.
 
Hermsdorf's victory in the Round of 128 was against UT Arlington's Agustina Serio, 3-6, 6-0, 10-5, and her second-round win came against Texas State freshman Joy Chia Ming Ming, 6-4, 6-2.
 
Senior Nada Marjanovic also defeated a Sam Houston Bearkat today, topping Ema Barkovic, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round. She then pushed nationally 51st-ranked and sixth-seeded Lynn Kiro to a third set before falling, 6-7, 6-2, 10-6. Kiro is one of the top players at Texas Tech, winning 24 singles matches last spring for a squad that went 21-6.
 
The Wildcats only won one of their five matches in doubles. Pothier and Erin Walker beat Collins and Dench of Texas State, 6-2, in the Round of 64, and then lost 6-2 to the TCU tandem of Garrido and Rivas.
