Wildcat tennis remains undefeated against Southland with matching 5-2 wins at UNO

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Abilene Christian's men's and women's tennis teams each improved to 2-0 on their Spring Break trip against Southland Conference opposition Wednesday as the Wildcats recorded a pair of 5-2 wins over New Orleans at the UNO Tennis Center.

The women's victory was their sixth in-a-row and lifted their season record to 10-2, while the ACU men evened their season mark at 7-7.

The ACU women's team began today's dual with its 10th doubles point in 12 matches and eighth sweep of the spring. Sisters Micah and Kaysie Hermsdorf won their 11th straight match at No. 1 together, beating the Privateer tandem of Grace Nolan and Yasmine Richard, 8-2, while the No. 2 and 3 teams of Brittney Reed and Erin Walker, and Nada Marjanovic and Emily Conrad doubled-up their competition by scores of 8-4.

ACU is now 28-6 (.824) in dual match doubles play as their No. 2 and 3 teams have combined for a 17-6 record behind the Hermsdorfs' mark of 11-0.

Into singles, seniors Micah Hermsdorf and Emily Conrad ran their individual winning streaks to three matches with victories at the No. 1 and 6 position. Hermsdorf beat Nolan in straight sets at the top spot, 6-4, 6-0, while Conrad conquered Richard, 6-2, 6-2.

Walker scored the victory at No. 4 in improving to 8-6, and Marjanovic cruised past Hafsa Laraibi at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1, for her team leading 12th singles win. Marjanovic also leads the Wildcats with a six-match winning streak.

As for the men, they once again grinded out a tough performance that included a tiebreak win at No. 3 doubles and three-set singles win from Jason Proctor over Luis Albuquerque, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, that raised his season record to 7-6.

The win by Michael Morris and Marco Bensley at No. 3 doubles was equally crucial as it kept the doubles point away from the Privateers. UNO won at the No. 1 position over Guilherme Gesser and Borja Cortés, 8-4, but lost by the same score at No. 2 to Proctor and Nico Agritelley.

In Sunday's win at Incarnate Word, it was the back half of the Wildcats' order that secured the 4-3 victory, but today it was the upper tier that won a bulk of the matches. Because in addition to Proctor's rally, Cortés improved to 8-5 with his win at No. 1 over Rui Silva, 6-3, 7-5, and sophomore Nicklas Wingord snapped a five-match losing streak at No. 2 with his 6-2, 7-6 decision over Gonzalo Garcia.

Bensley also did well at No. 6, defeating Daniel Populus, 6-2, 6-3, for his fourth-straight win.

The women's team returns to action tomorrow with a noon dual at Southeastern Louisiana, while the men's team is off from competition until March 22.
